THE UNITY PROJECT
THE UNITY PROJECT
THE UNITY QUILT -Is the first of many efforts to unite community during this difficult time of increased poverty, dwindling economic resource, and declining education. The arts are always the first to go, so we need a community of creators; artists, authors, poets, performers, activists, educators, and everyday people to bind in unity to help our earth and each other. So let's begin forming stronger bonds through the arts, such as through quilt making.
Learn more about the historical context of quilt making and humanity.

THE UNITY QUILT
The Unity Quilt will start at The Community Arts Workspace in Hacienda Heights.
Please bring fabric squares no smaller than 22w x 9h.
22 w x 18 h are excellent if you want to cut them down.
Or bring an old T-shirt, jacket, blanket, etc...you thought of throwing out. We will repurpose it.
Feel free to bring extra old
T-shirts for cutting up and using on the Unity Quilt. The IE Hope Collective will be going to a Foster Youth Group Home to continue this project and donations are welcome for extra fabric.
And if you are on need of fabric, don't worry we have extra squares for you too.

Juvenile Hall
(Artist Mentors/Artist in Residency Lead by Gina Duran)

As an outreach director and teacher, Duran work with volunteers, with my own organization, and with other organizations. Sometimes Duran is a volunteer and sometimes Duran is a lead instructor or teacher. On some occasions Duran work for other nonprofit organizations as an Independent Contractor with youth in Juvenile Hall, Foster Youth Group Homes, Homeless Centers/shelters, Refugee Camps, Mental Health Facilities, and nonprofits aiding Students with Disabilities. Due to the sensitive nature of this work, only some photos of student work are visible, and names have been excluded.
Students at this facility had limited access to art supplies and materials. They were not allowed access to internet and only certain books and pencils were available to them. The raps are unavailable but I can show them in an in person portfolio with redacted names. This course was in 2023 and the zine with student art was shown in an art exhibition for juvenile halls in California.

Students Ages 9-12

This was a Lead Teaching Role lead by Founder of the IE Hope Collective
Gina Duran, at a nonprofit alternative education school.
Students Ages 9-12 were taught painting and drawing for 11 weeks, in 2023.
Students in this setting were provided a budget for materials. This zine had fewer weeks than the juvenile hall, but Duran had access to internet and more supplies.
Students were able to make some limited voting on pages, but were not give access to computers for the full publication experience.
This is not the entire Zine. Only a few are available for examples of some of the art taught in workshops and classes.
